Let Emla cream help you and your baby through those first vaccinations.
Childhood vaccinations can be traumatic for both mum and baby. Despite your best efforts to soothe, and the nurse being as quick as she can, even the bravest of children can get very upset. Fortunately there's Emla numbing cream. This topical anaesthetic cream contains lidocaine and prilocaine a tried and tested formula which can help numb needle pain.
Simply apply approximately 2g (half a tube) 60 minutes before the procedure and cover it with an occlusive dressing. The application time and dose may differ depending on age, body area and procedure (dosage information can be found in the pack leaflet). Remove the dressing prior to procedure. Then when it’s time for the jabs you can stay calm, knowing you have done what you can to help ease your little ones’ discomfort.
Where to apply Emla
Emla cream needs to be applied to the site of the injection usually the upper arm or thigh. Generally speaking, babies under 12 months have their injections in the thigh and older children in the arm. To ensure you apply Emla in the correct area, contact your Practice Nurse and ask where she normally injects that particular vaccine. Always tell your Practice Nurse that you have applied numbing cream in a particular area so they know where to insert the needle.
